How to Make Japanese Vegetable and Tofu Stir-Fry

Japanese cuisine is celebrated for its balance of flavors, fresh ingredients, and healthy options. One popular dish that captures the essence of this culinary tradition is the Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry. This dish is not only quick and easy to prepare but also nutritious and satisfying. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to make a delicious Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry that can be a perfect addition to any meal.

Ingredients

To create a flavorful Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium carrot, sliced thinly
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 zucchini, sliced into half-moons
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced (optional)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Follow these simple steps to prepare your Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry:

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by cutting the firm tofu into bite-sized cubes. Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and sauté them until they are golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Once done, remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables

In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once heated, add the minced garlic and ginger (if using) and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the sliced carrot, bell pepper, zucchini, and broccoli. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 4-6 minutes until they are tender yet crisp.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

Once the vegetables are cooked, return the tofu to the pan. Pour in the soy sauce and mirin, and drizzle the sesame oil over the stir-fry. Gently toss the ingredients together to ensure everything is coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through and meld the flavors.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

Remove the stir-fry from heat and sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds on top for added flavor and texture. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles, making it a complete meal!

Tips for the Perfect Stir-Fry

To enhance your Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry, consider these helpful tips:

  • Choose seasonal vegetables for the freshest taste.
  • For added protein, include edamame or chickpeas.
  • Experiment with different vegetables like snap peas, mushrooms, or spinach.
  • Adjust the soy sauce and mirin to your taste for a sweeter or saltier dish.

This Japanese vegetable and tofu stir-fry is not only a standout meal but also a versatile recipe that can be customized to your liking. Enjoy the flavors of Japan right in your kitchen!
