How to Cook Seafood Donburi Japanese Style

Seafood Donburi is a delightful Japanese dish that features a bowl of rice topped with an array of fresh seafood and flavorful sauces. Cooking this dish at home can be both simple and rewarding. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cook Seafood Donburi Japanese style.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • 2 cups Japanese short-grain rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 250g assorted seafood (such as shrimp, scallops, and tuna)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon sake (Japanese rice wine)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Seaweed (nori), cut into strips for garnish
  • Chopped green onions for garnish
  • Pickled ginger for serving (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Rice

The foundation of Seafood Donburi is perfectly cooked rice. Rinse the Japanese short-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps achieve the desired stickiness.

In a pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

Step 2: Cook the Seafood

While the rice is cooking, prepare the seafood. If using shrimp, peel and devein them. For any scallops or fish fillets, ensure they are cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces.

In a frying pan, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add the seafood to the pan and sauté for about 3-5 minutes, until they are just cooked through. If you’re using raw fish like tuna, sear it lightly on both sides.

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, and sake. Pour this mixture over the seafood in the pan and stir gently to coat. Allow it to cook for an additional 2 minutes to let the flavors meld together. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Assemble the Donburi

To assemble your Seafood Donburi, take a serving bowl and add a generous portion of the cooked rice at the bottom. Then, delicately place the sautéed seafood on top of the rice.

Garnish with strips of nori and chopped green onions to add freshness and a pop of color. For those who enjoy extra flavor, add a side of pickled ginger.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy!

Your Seafood Donburi is now ready to be enjoyed! This comforting bowl combines the umami flavors of the seafood with the wholesome goodness of rice, making it a perfect meal for any occasion.

With its vibrant colors and rich flavors, Seafood Donburi makes for an appealing dish that’s sure to impress family and friends. Try this recipe to bring a taste of Japan into your home kitchen!
